K.1 The student will demonstrate growth in the use of oral language.
a) Listen to a variety of literary forms, including stories and poems.

K.4 The student will hear, say, and manipulate phonemes (small units of sound) of spoken language.
a) Identify orally words that rhyme.
b) Identify words orally according to shared beginning or ending sounds
c) Blend sounds orally to make words or syllables.
d) Divide one-syllable words into sounds (phonemes).
e) Divide words into syllables.
Activities
1. Long Vowel "A" - Students can watch a video clip from the video Phonics in Context: The Long and Short
Vowels - short vowel A (4:03) from www.unitedstreaming.com. Students can create word families using a
Kidspiration template (Mrs. Surface can create this.) and then use Word Maker on www.readwritethink.org.
2. "en" Sound - Read and discuss an "en" book with the students. As a class, using a projector, read Peg the
Hen from the Learn to Read section of www.starfall.com. Next, the students complete the "en" activity
individually from the website.
3. "at" Sound - Read and discuss an "at" book with the students. As a class, using a projector read Zac the Rat
from the Learn to Read section of www.starfall.com. Next, the students complete the "at" activity individually
from the website.
K.5 The student will understand how print is organized and read.
a) Hold print materials in the correct position.
b) Identify the front cover, back cover, and title page of a book.
c) Follow words from left to right and from top to bottom on a printed page.
d) Match voice with print: syllables, words, and phrases.

K.6 The student will demonstrate an understanding that print makes sense.
a) Explain that printed materials provide information.
b) Identify common signs and logos.
c) Read ten-high frequency words.
d) Read and explain own writing and drawings.

a) Identify and name the uppercase and lowercase letters of the alphabet.
b) Match consonant and short vowel sounds to appropriate letters.
c) Identify beginning consonant sounds in single-syllable words.
Activities
1. Alphabet - Read a book about the alphabet to the students and/or watch the video Animal ABCs (25 minutes)
from www.unitedstreaming.com. Students use the Kidspiration libraries to hunt for words that begin with each
letter of the alphabet on the Kidspiration ABC Hunt template. See the ABC Hunt template and student example
below.
2. Letter and Sound Recognition - Students can practice exploring websites to work on letter and sound
recognition. Check out Clifford's Interactive Storybooks.
3. Letter Recognition - Read Patty's Pumpkin Patch to the class. Have the students use Learn ABC on
www.starfall.com to work on the letters of the alphabet.
4. Students can use Pixie to create a class alphabet book. See example of the Letter A below.
4. Read Alphabet Mystery by Audrey Wood to the class. Have the students practice typing the alphabet using
the website http://teachingtreasures.com.au/k-3only/alphabet.htm. This can be done at individual computers or
using a SmartBoard and the SmartBoard keyboard.
K.8 The student will demonstrate comprehension of fiction and nonfiction.
a) Use pictures to make predictions about content.
b) Retell familiar stories, using the beginning, middle, and end.
c) Discuss characters, setting, and events.
d) Use story language in discussions and retellings.
e) Identify what an author does and what an illustrator does.
f) Identify the topics of nonfiction selections.
Activities
1. Jacket I Wear in the Snow - Read Jacket I Wear in the Snow. Using the Kidspiration Jacket I Wear in the
Snow template, the students will create their own story maps. The students move the articles of clothing into
the correct sequence using their knowledge of the story. See template below.
K.9 The student will print the uppercase and lowercase letters of the alphabet independently.

K.10 The student will print his/her first and last names.
Activities
1. Toot and Puddle's ABC - Read the book Toot and Puddle's ABC and discuss the alphabet. The students will
use the Kidspiration Toot and Puddle's template to click and drag the letters of their names in the correct order
in the blue oval. See sample below.
K.11 The student will write to communicate ideas.
a) Draw pictures and/or use letters and phonetically spelled words to write about experiences, stories,
people, objects, or events.
b) Write left to right and top to bottom.
