Activities
1. There's an Alligator Under My Bed - Read There's an Alligator Under My Bed to the class. Discuss the
book with the students. As a class answer the questions using the Alligator Comprehension template.
Using KidPix the students will draw their own illustrations of the book. See student sample.
2. Read the book Two Bad Ants. Have the students illustrate their favorite parts of the book using KidPix.
See examples.
3. Read the book Hubert's Hair-Raising Adventure. Have the students brainstorm their own version of
Hubert's story. Using the KidPix Hubert template the students will create their own pictures and writings
about Hubert the Lion. See Hubert example.
4. Students can research famous people and read biographies. They can use Timeliner to create a timeline
of the significant events in the famous person's life. See examples of famous people.
5. Students can read along with fairy tales at http://www.andersenfairytales.com/en/main or
http://www.grimmfairytales.com/en/main. They can complete a Kidspiration book review. See template
below.
2.9 The student will demonstrate comprehension of information in reference materials.
a) Use a table of contents.
b) Use pictures and charts.
c) Use dictionaries and indices.

1. Alphabetical Order - Read and discuss the book Alphabet Mystery. Using the Kidspiraton Alphabetical
Order 1 and Alphabetical Order 2 templates the students will be putting their spelling words in alphabetical
order by the first letter or the second letter.
2.10 The student will maintain manuscript and begin to make the transition to cursive.

2.11 The student will write stories, letters, and simple explanations.
a) Generate ideas before writing.
b) Organize writing to include a beginning, middle, and end.
c) Revise writing for clarity.
d) Use available technology.

1. Read the book Nice Try, Tooth Fairy by Mary W. Olson and parts of Yours Truly, Goldilocks by Alma Flor
Ada. Discuss the parts of a friendly letter. The students complete the Kidspiration Friendly Letter template.
2.12 The student will edit writing for correct grammar, capitalization, punctuation, and spelling.
a) Recognize and use complete sentences.
b) Use and punctuate declarative, interrogative, and exclamatory sentences.
c) Capitalize all proper nouns and the word I.
d) Use singular and plural nouns and pronouns.
e) Use apostrophes in contractions, including don't, isn't and can't.
f) Use correct spelling for high-frequency sight words, including compound words and regular plurals.
